A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 17, 2004 AS "SID GUTIERREZ DAY IN THE SENATE".

 

     WHEREAS, Sid Gutierrez became an astronaut in June 1985 and commanded two space shuttle missions; and

     WHEREAS, he was the first Hispanic to become both a pilot and commander of a space shuttle; and

     WHEREAS, he logged over four thousand five hundred hours of flying time in the United States air force before joining NASA's astronaut corps; and

     WHEREAS, he is a native New Mexican, born in June 1951 in Albuquerque, and he graduated from Valley high school in 1969; and

     WHEREAS, he attended the air force academy, earning a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering in 1973, and Webster college, earning a master's degree in management in 1977; and

     WHEREAS, he is the recipient of the distinguished flying cross, the legion of merit and the defense superior service medal; and

     WHEREAS, he retired from NASA and is now a manager at Sandia national laboratories;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that in recognition of and gratitude for his distinguished service to the country and to New Mexico, February 17, 2004 be declared "Sid Gutierrez Day in the Senate".
