AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FOR TRIBAL LITERACY PROGRAMS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Two million four hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred seventy-five dollars ($2,425,675) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal years 2006 and 2007 for new literacy programs on twelve tribal sites that integrate in-school, after-school and summer school literacy programs for children in grades kindergarten through eight. The department shall contract with a nonprofit sponsorship organization that has more than fifty years of experience working with Native American children, that is already working in New Mexico on the type of integrated tribal literacy program described above and that is willing to match state funds with one million two hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred twenty-five dollars ($1,237,525). Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2007 shall revert to the general fund.
