A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE TO ESTABLISH A WORK GROUP TO STUDY, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, STATE COLLEGES OF EDUCATION AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS, THE SUSTAINABILITY FOR FUTURE GROWTH, RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PURSUE FUTURE CAREERS IN EDUCATION.

 

     WHEREAS, the national education association founded the future teachers of America in 1937, which, in 1980, became the future educators association; and

     WHEREAS, the future educators association's mission is to inspire young people to consider careers in education by exposing students to the rewards, joys and challenges of careers in education; and

     WHEREAS, as a federally recognized career and technical student organization, the future educators association functions as a component of co-curricular programs for students interested in education-related careers; and

     WHEREAS, high schools that offer a state-approved career and technical education program of study can receive funds made available by the federal Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 2006; and

     WHEREAS, any discussion about current efforts to improve education must start with the quality of the teaching work force and ways to recruit and retain the highest quality teachers; and

     WHEREAS, local chapters of the future educators association can be beneficial in the recruitment of better and more diverse students into the teaching field;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative education study committee establish a work group to study, in collaboration with the career and technical education division of the public education department, the New Mexico chapter of the future educators association, colleges of education and public school district directors and teachers of career and technical education, the sustainability for the future growth, recruitment and training of high school students to pursue future careers in education; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the work group study and explore research that addresses sustainable future growth, recruitment and training of high school students to pursue future careers in education; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the work group develop a strategic plan that incorporates research proven to be effective and that it make recommendations to expand the future educators association chapters in high schools throughout the state; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the strategic plan, once developed, be shared with public school superintendents and charter school directors; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chair of the legislative education study committee, the director of the legislative education study committee, the secretary of public education, the director of the New Mexico chapter of the future educators association, public school superintendents, charter school directors and career technical education directors.
