A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 14, 2012 AS "ALZHEIMER'S DAY" IN THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, an estimated thirty-eight thousand New Mexicans suffer from Alzheimer's disease; and

     WHEREAS, eighty percent of home care for those with Alzheimer's is provided by family members; and

     WHEREAS, in 2010, more than one hundred thousand caregivers provided more than one hundred fourteen million five hundred thousand hours of unpaid care to New Mexicans suffering from Alzheimer's disease; and

     WHEREAS, the total value of this unpaid care is more than one billion three hundred million dollars ($1,300,000,000); and

     WHEREAS, the number of people worldwide with Alzheimer's and other types of dementia is rising substantially, with dementia prevalence expected to double every twenty years, to one hundred fifteen million four hundred thousand people worldwide by 2050; and

     WHEREAS, the mission of the Alzheimer's association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through advancement of research, the provision and enhancement of care and support for all affected and reduction of the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health; and

     WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's association works with many partners, including support groups, training groups, advocacy campaigns, caregivers and families, to mobilize the public and advocate for those touched by Alzheimer's disease;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 14, 2012 be declared "Alzheimer's Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the Alzheimer's association of New Mexico.
