A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE SENATE TO SUPPORT A FEASIBILITY AND MARKET STUDY FOR A NATIONAL NAVAJO CODE TALKERS MUSEUM AND VETERANS CENTER.

     WHEREAS, the Navajo language provided the United States with a code that the Japanese could not break that was used throughout the second world war; and

     WHEREAS, beginning with only twenty-nine young men, the Navajo code talkers developed the code and saved many American soldiers' lives by using the code for messages amidst the chaos of battle; and

     WHEREAS, few Navajo code talkers remain with us today to inform younger generations of the bravery and heroism that these warriors displayed on behalf of their country and homeland; and

     WHEREAS, to preserve the legacy of these brave soldiers, a national Navajo code talkers museum and veterans center has been envisioned; and

     WHEREAS, the first step to making the vision of a national Navajo code talkers museum and veterans center a reality is to complete a feasibility and marketing study;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the concept of creating a Navajo code talkers museum and veterans center be supported; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the first step in developing the Navajo code talkers museum and veterans center be to support a feasibility and market study and to plan the process needed to make the museum and veterans center a reality; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of Indian affairs.
