A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT A PARTICULAR, NOT-QUITE-A-MEMBER-OF-THE-SENATE, BE DRAFTED TO PLAY ON THE SENATE BASKETBALL TEAM.

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico state senate, despite being the upper chamber and having superior talent, wit, guile and good looks, has not won as many of the annual house versus senate basketball games as most legislative observers and sports enthusiasts have predicted; and

     WHEREAS, while this year's senate basketball team features a broad, deep, intimidating and near-certain winning combination of size, speed, athleticism, strategic thinking and the aforementioned good looks, it is a truism in athletic competition that a team can never have too many good, and good-looking, players; and

     WHEREAS, the annual house-senate basketball game is scheduled for February 7, 2014, leaving teams with very little practice time; and

     WHEREAS, although not technically a member of the body, the current lieutenant governor shares the height, athleticism, good looks and basketball skills that the members of the senate basketball team have; and

     WHEREAS, the rules of the senate call for the lieutenant governor to vote when the senate is equally divided, which makes him enough of a member to lace up his sneakers and play a little basketball; and

     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Sanchez has had a legendary basketball career, from the playgrounds of Albuquerque, through middle and high school, and even as a key contributor on the 2001 and 2002 house basketball team, connecting on several pivotal buckets in the house versus senate games he played in; and

     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Sanchez has had sufficient time to recover from whatever injury sidelined him during the 2013 house versus senate game;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez be formally drafted as a member of the senate basketball team; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Lieutenant Governor Sanchez be urged to begin reporting to team practices, strategy sessions and scrimmages as soon as possible; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, should the game be evenly divided at the end of regulation play, Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez be the designated free-throw shooter for the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be immediately and urgently transmitted to the office of the lieutenant governor, the house of representatives and national basketball association scouts.
