A JOINT MEMORIAL

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR ITS EFFORTS TO BRING SAFE, SCIENTIFIC AND COMMUNITY-APPROPRIATE METHODS OF ROADSIDE VEGETATION CONTROL TO NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, the department of transportation's mission statement is: "Provide a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while promoting economic development and preserving the environment of New Mexico."; and

     WHEREAS, the department of transportation has worked diligently with experts and community members statewide to find appropriate, environmentally sound and cost-effective control methods to manage vegetation; and

     WHEREAS, the technology for viable safe alternatives to chemicals continues to expand; and

     WHEREAS, pesticide spraying puts organic farms at risk; and

     WHEREAS, organic farming is important to New Mexico's economy, with one hundred sixteen registered organic farms and ranches generating tens of millions of dollars in sales annually;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be recognized for its efforts to bring safe, scientific and community-appropriate methods of roadside vegetation control to New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the governor and the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council.
