A JOINT MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING LAS AMIGAS DE NUEVO MEXICO AS GOODWILL AMBASSADORS FOR ITS WORK IN PROMOTING NEW MEXICO AND ITS CULTURE AROUND THE WORLD AND REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO ISSUE A PROCLAMATION DECLARING LAS AMIGAS DE NUEVO MEXICO OFFICIAL GOODWILL AMBASSADORS FOR THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, 2023 marks forty years since las amigas de Nuevo Mexico was officially established as a women's organization separate from New Mexico amigos; and

     WHEREAS, las amigas de Nuevo Mexico was founded in 1983 by former New Mexico secretary of state Clara Padilla Andrews; and

     WHEREAS, las amigas de Nuevo Mexico has the mission to promote New Mexico and its unique culture by traveling around the state, country and globe, often with an annual trip to a specific destination; and

     WHEREAS, the first friendship flight nearly forty years ago was to Mexico, where its members met with government officials in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico City and Cancun; and

     WHEREAS, las amigas de Nuevo Mexico is an example of friendship, tolerance and community building, with its members hailing from all over the state with differing political affiliations, economic statuses and religious affiliations;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that las amigas de Nuevo Mexico be recognized as official goodwill ambassadors for its efforts to promote the state of New Mexico and its culture around the world; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the governor be requested to issue a proclamation designating las amigas de Nuevo Mexico as official goodwill ambassadors; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor and las amigas de Nuevo Mexico.
