A JOINT MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, IN COORDINATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, TO ESTABLISH A STATEWIDE PROGRAM TO DESIGNATE HIGHWAY SEGMENTS AS MEMORIAL CORRIDORS IN HONOR OF NEW MEXICO STATE POLICE OFFICERS WHO WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND DIRECTING THE FIRST DESIGNATION TO HONOR OFFICER DARIAN JARROTT ON INTERSTATE 10 IN LUNA COUNTY.
WHEREAS, since 1935, the New Mexico state police has been entrusted with protecting the lives, property and safety of all New Mexicans; and
WHEREAS, many brave officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, giving their lives in service to others; and
WHEREAS, the legislature of the state of New Mexico recognizes that these fallen officers deserve permanent and visible recognition for their selfless commitment to justice and public safety; and
WHEREAS, designating highway segments as memorial corridors where officers served or lost their lives will preserve their memory and remind all who travel these roads of the cost of public safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation and the department of public safety be requested to establish a statewide program to designate highway segments as memorial corridors in honor of New Mexico state police officers who were killed in the line of duty and direct the first designation to honor officer Darian Jarrott on interstate 10 in Luna county; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that each segment bear the officer's name and rank and be marked by a sign stating: "In honor of [rank] [full name], New Mexico State Police - Killed in the Line of Duty"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the department of transportation be requested to use available funds, including private donations, to fund the fabrication, installation and maintenance of the memorial signs and coordinate with local governments, civic organizations and law enforcement associations for ceremonies and dedications; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the department of public safety be requested to maintain an official registry made available on the department's website of the fallen state police officers, listing each officer's name and date of death and the corresponding memorial highway segment; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the secretary of public safety, the chief of the New Mexico state police and the families of fallen state police officers.
