A MEMORIAL

EXTENDING THE CONDOLENCES OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO REPRESENTATIVE MURRAY RYAN AND FAMILY UPON THE DEATH OF LYDA MURRAY RYAN.



WHEREAS, Lyda Murray Ryan was born on July 11, 1897 in Central, New Mexico and passed away on May 2, 1998; and

WHEREAS, her paternal grandfather came west with the cavalry to provide protection for the settlers in the Silver City area; and

WHEREAS, her mother came to New Mexico by covered wagon as a young widow with two children; and

WHEREAS, W.D. Murray, her father, was a participant in the convention that developed the constitution of New Mexico and served the Silver City area as a state senator; and

WHEREAS, Lyda Murray Ryan recalled tales told to her of the early rough and wild days in Silver City; and

WHEREAS, Lyda Murray Ryan recalled the days when groceries were delivered, when horses were hitched to posts along Bullard Street, when the commute from Central (now called Santa Clara) to Silver City was by horse and took most of the day, when the Chino Mine was first being developed and when a new hospital was started in town; and

WHEREAS, Silver City was a bustling town, full of beautiful brick buildings and Victorian homes, but many young people like Lyda Murray Ryan had to leave town to obtain a high school education; and

WHEREAS, in 1919 Lyda Murray became Lyda Murray Ryan when she married James Stanton Ryan, a young baseball player from Chicago who had come to Silver City to play in the Copper League; and

WHEREAS, Lyda and James were blessed with four children, Martha, Mary, Jim and Murray, who kept the family home active and lively for many years as they grew up; and

WHEREAS, Lyda's son Murray became a state representative and is the most senior legislator and is retiring from the legislature; and

WHEREAS, twenty-two grandchildren and four great- grandchildren blessed her life;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolences be extended to Representative Murray Ryan and the friends and family of Lyda Murray Ryan, an outstanding and devoted New Mexican.
