SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill



House Bill 159 appropriates $399.0 in general fund to the Department of Public Safety for expenditure in FY01 to provide state matching funds to hire law enforcement officers in the following agencies in the 4th Judicial District:



San Miguel County Sheriff's Department $ 58.0 for three officers

Mora Country Sheriff's Department $ 70.0 for two officers

Las Vegas Police Department $140.0 for three officers

Santa Rosa Police Department $131.0 for two officers



Any unexpended or unencumbered balances remaining at the end of FY01 shall revert to the general fund.



Significant Issues



The AODA states this money would be used as match for the Community Oriented Policing Program, a federal grant program.



FISCAL IMPLICATIONS



House Bill 159 appropriated $399.0 in general fund for FY01. All unexpended or unencumbered balances remaining revert at the end of FY 2001.





ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS



The AOC reports the hiring of additional officers is likely to result in more arrests and more cases brought to court. Increases caseloads in the courts may require additional resources.
