SUMMARY

Synopsis of SFC Amendment

The Senate Finance Committee amendment reduces the appropriation to $100.0. All other provisions remain unchanged.

Synopsis of Original Bill

Senate Bill 252 appropriates $2,500.0 to SDE from the general fund for expenditure in fiscal years 2001 and 2002 to provide school safety grants to school districts utilizing an application process.

Significant Issues

The appropriation may be used to purchase and install metal detectors and other safety infrastructure and to fund other school safety initiatives. SDE shall work with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to develop a grant application process and criteria for evaluation of proposals submitted.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The bill appropriates $2,500.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure during fiscal years 2001 and 2002. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance reaming a the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATION

Staff from SDE and DPS will have to implement the program with existing staff.
