SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The memorial requests the Department of Health in cooperation with the Environment Department study the municipal water supplies in New Mexico to determine which supplies have optimum levels of fluoridation and make recommendations regarding issues of fluoridation.

Significant Issues

The Department of Health (DOH) indicated 65% of New Mexico's municipal water supplies are fluoridated compared to the federally recommended amount of 75%. DOH indicated fluoridation is most cost effective for communities with populations over 2,500.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The Department of Health does not have funding to do the work requested in the memorial unless it might be able to include this work in its currently funded operations.
