AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO HIRE ADDITIONAL SCHOOL NURSES.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Three million five hundred ten thousand dollars ($3,510,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 for the purpose of hiring ninety new school nurses to perform essential health services in the public schools statewide, including coordinating health services, providing health education for students and parents, identifying health and safety concerns in school environments, supporting and providing nutrition programs, conducting health assessments and screenings, providing care for students with disabilities, administering medications, identifying abused and neglected children, providing student case conferences and saving lives in emergency situations. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
