AN ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION; CREATING A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR FUTURE TEACHERS; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of the Public School Code is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] FUTURE TEACHERS PROGRAM--CREATED.--The department of education shall develop and implement a program to recruit, mentor and prepare students who are attending New Mexico high schools and New Mexico post-secondary educational institutions for a career in teaching. The program may include summer instruction, including teaching methodologies and classroom experience; mentorship from New Mexico classroom teachers; and other immersion and preparation strategies to attract qualified students to teaching. The program shall include an evaluation component that measures the short- and long-term success of the program. The department shall report periodically to the legislative education study committee on the development, implementation and evaluation of the program."

Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Three hundred nine thousand dollars ($309,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 to carry out the provisions of Section 1 of this act. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
