AN ACT

RELATING TO COUNTY SHERIFFS; PROVIDING THAT SHERIFFS RECEIVE ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION FOR ADVANCED LAW ENFORCEMENT CERTIFICATION.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. SHERIFFS--ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING.--In addition to the salaries provided for sheriffs in Sections 4-44-4 through 4-44-8 NMSA 1978, but not to exceed those maximum salaries, a sheriff shall receive a training increment annually for each level of advanced law enforcement certification for which the sheriff has qualified as established by the New Mexico law enforcement academy:

A. in a class A county, two thousand dollars ($2,000) annually for each level of certification;

B. in a class B county with an assessed valuation of over three hundred million dollars ($300,000,000), one thousand seven hundred fifty dollars ($1,750) annually for each level of certification;

C. in a class B county with an assessed valuation of under three hundred million dollars ($300,000,000), one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500) annually for each level of certification;

D. in a class C county, one thousand two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($1,250) annually for each level of certification; and

E. in a county of the first class with an assessed valuation of over twenty-seven million dollars ($27,000,000), one thousand dollars ($1,000) annually for each level of certification.

Section 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2001.
