AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION THE NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TO FINANCE A PILOT PROJECT TO CONVERT PRODUCED WATER TO POTABLE WATER IN EDDY AND LEA COUNTIES.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the New Mexico department of agriculture for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 to finance a pilot project in Eddy and Lea counties through the manufactured water committee, a committee established pursuant to a joint powers agreement between the Lea county soil and water conservation district and the Carlsbad soil and water conservation district. The pilot project shall be conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of converting water produced in oil and gas production to potable water. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
