AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TO SUPPORT A MEDIA EMPLOYMENT AND EDUCATION INITIATIVE IN TAOS COUNTY.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--

A. Seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the economic development department for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 to contract for services to support a media employment and media education initiative to reach middle school and high school students in Taos county that will:

(1) offer students the tools to understand how mass media functions, with a strong focus on the effects on youth of violence in the media;

(2) train teachers in media education issues;

(3) motivate at-risk students to be active participants in their education and career development;

(4) provide training and support in media production to students; and

(5) encourage student involvement in media issues and facilitate connections between youth creators and the film industry.

B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
