AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A LATINO YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM AT NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE OF MINING AND TECHNOLOGY.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--

A. Two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico institute of mining and technology for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 for a leadership and motivational training program for New Mexican Latino youth to:

(1) prepare and conduct extended workshops and training camps for Latino high school students prior to their senior year;

(2) identify and assist Latino high school students with leadership potential to participate in culturally appropriate leadership and motivational programs;

(3) create and conduct college planning and financial preparation programs for Latino high school students, particularly students from rural and disadvantaged environments, and their parents or guardians;

(4) identify, coordinate, marshal and disseminate information about public and private resources in order to extend specialized training and preparation to and for Latino high school students in order to promote and facilitate their successful participation in college and university screening tests and examinations, including the scholastic aptitude test and the American college test; and

(5) work with school districts that have rural and disadvantaged student populations to provide continuous coordinated funding and program initiatives that include outreach components for Latino high school students.

B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
