AN ACT

RELATING TO BIRTH CERTIFICATES; PROVIDING THE MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION OF THE TAXATION AND REVENUE DEPARTMENT WITH AUTHORITY TO ISSUE WALLET-SIZED REPLICAS OF BIRTH CERTIFICATES; AUTHORIZING A FEE; ENACTING A NEW SECTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE CODE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of the Motor Vehicle Code is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] AUTHORITY TO ISSUE A WALLET-SIZED REPLICA OF A BIRTH CERTIFICATE--FEE.--

A. The department, through its motor vehicle division field offices, shall reproduce a person's birth certificate and issue a wallet-sized replica of the birth certificate if the person presents a certified copy of a birth certificate issued by the vital statistics bureau of the health services division of the department of health.

B. The department may charge a reasonable fee for each wallet-sized replica of a birth certificate that it produces and issues.

C. The fees collected by the department pursuant to the provisions of Subsection B of this section are appropriated to the department."

Section 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2001.
