SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

This bill appropriates $75.0 from the general fund to the CYFD for the purpose of providing or contracting for a pilot project in Bernalillo county that provides parenting education services to teenage mothers who are juvenile offenders in the custody of the department.

Significant Issues

CYFD provides parenting education services for teenaged mothers in its custody at the New Mexico Girls' School in Albuquerque. This appropriation would provide for additional services; however, according to CYFD, there have been only five pregnant teenagers in their custody during the past year.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $75.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
