SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
HB 797 repeals the provision for taking an animal on private land, and excludes landowners and lessees from penalties from taking game which is threatening human life or damaging property, including crops.
Significant Issues
Taking animals which are destroying property, including crops, will be subject to civil liabilities.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
HB 797 contains no appropriation. However, an anticipated increase in violations of Section 17-2-10 NMSA 1978 will increase revenues from penalties. Landowners will protect their property and crops even in the face of potential penalties.
