SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Joint Memorial 28 requests the Secretary of State to develop an official registry of existing community land grants in New Mexico.

Significant Issues

The memorial emphasizes that community land grants have existed in New Mexico since the early sixteenth century and that the only complete official registry of the land grants is with the federal government. Because nearly all the remaining community land grants are located in New Mexico, the memorial calls for a state registry of land grants.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The joint memorial does not contain an appropriation or any significant fiscal implications.
