SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House memorial 17 requests that New Mexico State University (NMSU) football fans, the Aggies, attend the "Aggie Day for the Lobos" at the University of New Mexico (UNM) versus University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) football game. At the game, the Aggies are requested to cheer for the Lobos. If they find they can not bring themselves to root for the Lobos, the Aggies are requested to voice their displeasure with the Miners of UTEP. This memorial requests the UNM athletic department declare September 1, 2001 as "Aggie Day for the Lobos".

Significant Issues

NMSU and STEP signed a multi-year football contract in January 1998 which calls for football games in 1999, 2000, and 2003 to be played at STEP and the games in 2001and 2002 to be played at NMSU. NMSU honored the contract by playing at STEP in both 1999 and 2000. STEP requested NMSU move the 2001 game to STEP. NMSU declined.

Canceling this game has been very disappointing to the fans who enjoy the rivalry between the institutions.

The rivalry between the Aggies and the Miners has only been interrupted three times since 1914. Those interruptions occurred in 1934 and during the two world wars.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

According to the CHE, STEP's decision has a fiscal impact on NMSU. Based upon conservative estimates, the revenue NMSU will lose with the loss of the STEP football game is approximately $100,000. This figure includes season ticket sales, individual game ticket sales, and concessions.
