SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 25 pertains to public education and mandates that public schools provide formal academic competitions.
Significant Issues
This bill amends the Public School Code to require that public schools in each conference shall provide academic competitions similar to their athletic competitions. Students who participate in such competitions shall qualify for an academic letter in the subject in which they compete. Academic competition between schools will be governed by the New Mexico activities association.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Since this bill requires local school boards to plan and implement a new program, without an associated appropriation, school districts will be required to absorb new administrative and staffing costs. The New Mexico activities association will also face indeterminate administrative costs since it is required to administer this program on a statewide basis.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
School districts and the New Mexico activities association may be required to add new FTE to implement this program.
