SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

To honor Ms. Sue Ellen Peralta's contributions, commitment and dedication to Valencia campus and the students of the University of New Mexico (UNM), Senate Joint Memorial 30 requests the Board of Regents of UNM to identify the Valencia campus child care center as the Sue Ellen Peralta Child Care Center.

Significant Issues

Sue Ellen Peralta was a lifelong resident of Belen when she died suddenly on January 9, 2001.

Ms. Peralta (a single parent) enrolled in UNM at Valencia in 1988 because she recognized the need to provide a better life for herself and her three children. She received her Bachelor's degree in political science and communications from UNM in 1996 and began working for UNM in Albuquerque.

Ms. Peralta believed fervently in the rights of students and became involved in student government, eventually becoming the Student Body President of the University of New Mexico at Valencia, assistant lobby director of the associated students of UNM, director of the lobby committee of associated students of UNM and director of the associated students of New Mexico. Additionally, she worked diligently on student regent issues and for a campus emergency phone system.

Because of her love of education and the Valencia branch, Ms. Peralta was a candidate for the UNM at Valencia advisory board at the time of her death;
