SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

SJM 34 designates April 24, 2001 as "Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day."

Significant Issues

SJM 34 calls attention to a horrific slice of human history which is the murder and genocide of millions of innocent Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during an eight-year span beginning in 1915. As an observation and learning device, an officially-designated day in New Mexico may be effective. Local and national media may assist in observations efforts by devoting sizeable time and print space to this issue.
