SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 68 expresses continued support by the Legislature for the New Mexico distinguished public service awards program and urges all federal, state, local and Native American governmental entities in New Mexico, as well as private sector business and civic organizations, to support recognition of outstanding public service. A copy of this memorial is also to be transmitted to the director of the New Mexico distinguished public service awards program.

Significant Issues

During the past thirty-one consecutive years of awards recognition, the distinguished public service awards program has honored more than three hundred New Mexicans for their contributions to public service. At the annual distinguished public service awards dinner in Albuquerque on May 18, 2001, a new group of distinguished New Mexicans will be recognized for their contributions.

This program was recently formalized as a nonprofit corporation in New Mexico, with an archive established at the University of New Mexico, and began granting scholarships this year for graduate education in the area of public service in New Mexico.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill has no fiscal impact to the general fund.
