Synopsis of Bill

Senate Memorial 19 requests the Board of Regents of the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) to study the feasibility of admissions of the physically challenged and report their results to the Legislative Education Study Committee and the Commission on Higher Education by November 1, 2001.

Significant Issues

The justification for this request as outlined in the memorial:

•The New Mexico military institute offers some of the best educational programs in the state

•It is important for students to participate in a diverse student body

•It is the right of all students regardless of their social and physical capacity to exercise their minds to their fullest capacities
•Discrimination of any kind is an anathema to a well-rounded educational experience

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill has no fiscal impact on the general fund.
