A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE APPROPRIATE INTERIM COMMITTEE TO STUDY FUTURE USES OF FORT STANTON.



WHEREAS, Fort Stanton was established in 1855 and played an important part in the settlement and early history of Lincoln county and continued to serve a variety of functions into the twentieth century; and

WHEREAS, Fort Stanton is entered on the state register of historic places and the national register of historic places; and

WHEREAS, proper utilization of Fort Stanton could have a positive impact on tourism in Lincoln county and New Mexico; and

WHEREAS, the Kells and Craig study is a study contracted for by the state to explore the best uses of Fort Stanton and its facilities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council direct the appropriate interim committee to review the results of the Kells and Craig study, conduct public hearings to provide a forum for public comment on the study recommendations and develop recommendations on the future of Fort Stanton; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the committee report its recommendations prior to the second session of the forty-fifth legislature; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council.
