SENATE MEMORIAL 35

45th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 2001

INTRODUCED BY

John Arthur Smith

A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CUSTOM SERVICE TO DEVELOP A COMMERCIAL BORDER CROSSING AT ANTELOPE WELLS.

WHEREAS, New Mexico has three ports of entry: Santa Teresa, south of Las Cruces; Columbus/Las Palomas, south of Deming; and Antelope Wells, south of Lordsburg; and

WHEREAS, the north American free trade agreement will increase traffic all along the border; and

WHEREAS, Antelope Wells is currently a noncommercial port of entry but is geographically located such that commercial crossings could reduce traffic on other highways and provide for speedier delivery of goods;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the United States custom service be requested to expand the Antelope Wells port of entry to include commercial traffic; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of state and to the New Mexico congressional delegation.
