AN ACT

MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO PROVIDE EXPANDED NURSING EDUCATION THROUGH NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Six hundred thousand dollars ($600,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico state university for expenditure in fiscal years 2002 and 2003 for the purpose of hiring new faculty and purchasing necessary equipment to expand nursing education on the main campus and at various branch colleges of the university. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2003 shall revert to the general fund.

Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Four hundred fifty thousand dollars ($450,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico state university for expenditure in fiscal years 2002 and 2003 for the purpose of raising nursing faculty salaries to competitive levels to maintain adequate teaching staff in the nursing department of the college of health and social services. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2003 shall revert to the general fund.

Section 3. EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
