SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 426 appropriates $400.0 from the general fund to the Tourism Department to encourage tourism by implementing a promotional campaign that emphasizes the Intertribal Ceremonial, the Gathering of Nations, the Indian National Finals Rodeo and the Indian Market.

     Significant Issues

The agency indicates that there is an Indian Tourism program within the department.  These funds would enhance the resources for that program’s advertising of Native American events.  Additional performance measures for this program would be developed that are not in the current market and advertising plan.  The department also suggest that utilizing the existing cooperative advertising funds for such purposes would be an option to enhance the promotion of these events.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $400.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2003 shall revert to the general fund.
