SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Joint Memorial 1 specifies that the appropriate legislative interim committee be requested to consider recommendations for the adoption of the Sandia Hairstreak, a native New Mexican butterfly, as the official state butterfly since it contributes to the beauty, diversity and enchantment of the New Mexico landscape.

    Significant Issues

New Mexico's state symbols include the official animal, cookie, flower, insect, grass, fish, fossil, bird, quest6ion, gem and vegetable, but do not currently include an official butterfly.  By adding an official butterfly symbol, the beauty and diversity to the state's array of existing symbols would be enhanced.

Identifying an official butterfly would add credibility to New Mexico among professional entomologists and may encourage additional scientific research in the state.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There may be administrative and programmatic costs associated with full implementation of the recommendations contained in HJM1.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The bill encourages the appropriate state agencies to promote the Sandia Hairstreak as the official state butterfly.
