Synopsis of Bill

House Joint Memorial 79 directs the Legislative Council to direct a appropriate interim legislative committee to :

• Identify strengths and weaknesses of the current New Mexico transportation system;
• Determine how the current system can be strengthened to maintain the quality of life and cultural character of both urban and rural communities unique to New Mexico;
• Determine how government actions on transportation issues can involve more public input and increased accountability;
• Develop a transportation policy that will improve the lives of all New Mexicans while providing for the preservation of New Mexico’s unique culture and environment; and
• Educate the Legislature on urban and rural transportation issues and needs.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Presumably, the expenses of the committee can be paid from the appropriation contained in Subsection B of Section 3 of House Bill 1 (Feed Bill) for legislative interim expenses.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The staff of the Legislative Council and Legislative Finance Committee would probably support the work of the committee.
