SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Memorial 12 designates January 30, 2002 as “Matt J. Sandoval Day” and resolves that a copy of the memorial be transmitted to the family of Matt J. Sandoval.

     Significant Issues

HM 12 recognizes Matt J. Sandoval, a lifelong resident of New Mexico who made lasting contributions and who passed away on December 12, 2001.  Mr. Sandoval served honorably in the United States Army as a medical technician.  Mr. Sandoval dedicated his professional life to education and continued his life as an educator after retirement, teaching students about the benefits of not smoking and using his own experience with cancer as a lesson for them.  Mr. Sandoval strongly advocated for a smoke-free environment and was involved in having the State Capital designated as a smoke free environment.  Mr. Sandoval was also a tireless advocate for the American Association of Retired People (AARP) and was active in his community as a member of the American Legion, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and La Socieded de San Jose.  Mr. Sandoval is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Helen; his son, Matt, Jr.; his daughter, Karen Marquez; two grandchildren; and countless friends and admirers.
