SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Memorial 10 requests school districts through out the state to use Veterans’ Day for teacher’s in-service training while providing students the opportunity to celebrate and honor those who have served in the military.

     Significant Issues

The memorial also requests that local school boards encourage school districts prior to Veteran’s Day, to provide educational activities and information that appraises the contributions of our country’s veterans.

According to SDE, the State Board of Education authorizes and approves all 89 school district’s Professional Development Plans in accordance with statute 22-2-2.AA. Implementation of House Memorial 20 would impact the number of teaching days set by the SBE  since currently, Veteran’s Day, November 11 is a teaching day for teachers and students, despite its status as a federal holiday.  Any changes that would shorten the number of teaching days for students would have to be accounted for by extending the academic calendar.
