SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 374 appropriates $225.0 to the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico (UNM) for expenditure in FY2003 to conduct forensic investigations and related services as requested by Indian nations, tribes or pueblos in New Mexico.

     Significant Issues

According to Office of the Medical Investigator, as part of the criminal investigation process they are authorized to conduct mandatory autopsies only where state law is applicable.  Since tribal lands are outside the statutory jurisdiction of the state, they do provide forensic services to tribes when invited to do so but must charge for the services.
