SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 8 resolves that DOH create a task force that includes representatives from the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Support Association of New Mexico, health care practitioners and others to develop a plan to implement a program of education, awareness and support groups concerning the issue of prostate cancer in New Mexico.  The task force would present its plan and recommendations to the appropriate legislative committee by October 2002.

     Significant Issues

Each year in New Mexico, over 1,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and almost 200 die of the disease.  Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

DOH reports it currently contracts with the Prostate Cancer Support Association (PCSA) of New Mexico in the amount of $50.0, primarily for support services to men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.  PCSA is also active in seeking ways to educate men about prostate cancer risk reduction, screening and treatment.
