SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 72 requests the State Highway Commission designate United States Highway 666 as the “Navajo Code Talkers Highway.”

     Significant Issues

In May 1998 the State Highway Commission memorialized New Mexico highway 264 at the “Navajo Code Talkers Highway”.

The State Highway Commission policy allowing memorial or honorary designation of highways prevents the naming of a highway, which will “cause confusion or safety concerns for the traveling public as determined by the Secretary.”   Having identically named highways which intersect, would cause confusion to the traveling public.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

No fiscal impact.
