SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Memorial 6 recognizes the significance of honoring and commemorating the life and times of Padre Antonio Jose Martinez and his numerous contributions to New Mexico history.

     Significant Issues

According to the State Commission of Public Records in the analysis of this memorial, the contributions made by Padre Antonio Jose Martinez have been overshadowed by his alleged excommunication from the Catholic Church by Bishop Lamy circa 1856.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

The State Commission of Public Records lists the following accomplishments regarding Padre Antonio Jose Martinez:

Under the Mexican Republic (1821-1846) Padre Martinez served six different times as a

member of the Assembly of the Departmento; 1830, 1831, 1836, 1837, 1845, 1846.  In

December of 1847, under an imposed military government by the United States, Padre

Martinez became a representative to New Mexico’s First Legislative Assembly.  He also

participated in the Territorial Constitutional Conventions of 1848 and 1850.  He also served

as President of the Council for the First Territorial Legislative Assembly.  Padre Martinez

also served as a council member for the Second Legislative Assembly in 1852 and the

Twelfth Legislative Assembly in 1862.
