SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Memorial designates February 6, 2002 as "Institute of American Indian Arts Day."

     Significant Issues

This is the 40-year anniversary of the 1962 founding of the venerable Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), a national, multi-tribal center of higher education for Native American youth located in Santa Fe.  The Institute, among its many achievements, is credited with developing and promulgating the Indian art movement in the United States and the world.  Numerous alumni of the IAIA have been leaders in the contemporary art scene and have served as role models for the integrity of Native American self-expression.

IAIA will celebrate its anniversary with several activities -- April 2002 through spring 2003 -- including a high-profile national symposium addressing current and future issues for Native Americans.
