Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 336 appropriates $200.0 from the general fund to the Human Services Department for the purpose of establishing a senior citizens social work program in Rio Arriba and Taos counties.

Significant Issues

The social services to be provided consist of a home visit program that will provide assistance to seniors in filing applications for a variety of programs including Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, weatherization, housing renovation and assisting with transportation and similar services.

Support of this nature is already provided by the Agency on Aging through its Health Insurance and Benefits Assistance Corps and local senior center services. The appropriation may be used more efficiently by the Agency on Aging since it already has a network in place to assist with these services.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $200.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the General Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY 2003 shall revert to the General Fund.
