SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 12 requests the New Mexico Legislature to continue the Legislative Education Study Committee ad hoc committee on education reform.

     Significant Issues

The Legislative Education Study Committee participated in the Education Initiatives and Accountability Task Force, established in 1999 by the New Mexico Legislative Council. The purpose of the task force was to review the current status of New Mexico’s educational system and to make recommendations to the Legislature to reform the system for improved performance. The legislation would continue the ad hoc committee to continue the focus of the task force.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

None indicated in this legislation.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

According to SDE, the State Board of Education, department staff and public school testimony and involvement   is   assumed  to be connected to the ad hoc committee’s continued work for education reform.

CONFLICT

The SDE indicates that a conflict appears with HB27 for creating another committee to begin another education reform process.
