A MEMORIAL

DECLARING JANUARY 30, 2002 "MATT J. SANDOVAL DAY" AT THE NEW MEXICO SENATE.



WHEREAS, Matt J. Sandoval, a lifelong resident of New Mexico who made a lasting contribution to the state, passed away on December 12, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval served honorably in the United States army as a medical technician; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval dedicated his professional life to education, working thirty-three years as a teacher, principal and coach in the West Las Vegas and Mora school systems; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval continued his life as an educator after retirement, teaching students about the benefits of not smoking and using his own experience with cancer as a lesson for them; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval strongly advocated for a smoke-free environment and was involved in having the state capitol designated a smoke-free environment; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was a tireless advocate for the American association of retired persons, serving as a state legislative liaison, presenting bills on education, health and long-term care; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was active in his community as a member of the American legion, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church and La Sociedad de San Jose; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Helen; his son, Matt, Jr.; his daughter, Karen Marquez; two grandchildren; and countless friends and admirers;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 30, 2002 be designated "Matt J. Sandoval Day"; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the family of Matt J. Sandoval.
