SUMMARY

     Synopsis of SRC Amendment

The Senate Rules Committee amendment to House Joint Memorial 31expands those covered by the memorial to all New Mexico prisoners of war in the Philippines in World War II and recommends they be awarded the Bronze Star or a Combat Infantry Badge.

     Synopsis of Original Bill

House Joint Memorial 31 resolves that the New Mexico congressional delegation be requested to recommend that the United States Congress recognize the survivors of the “Bataan Death March” by presenting them with the medal of honor.

     Significant Issues

The 200th Coast Artillery Regiment of the New Mexico National Guard were among the first forces to engage the Japanese imperial army during the invasion of the Philippine Islands in World War II.  They were force-marched in what is now known as the “Bataan Death March”.  Only 900 of the 1,800 survived the march and captivity and became known as “the battling bastards of Bataan.”
