SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Joint Memorial 58 requests the Department of Environment to study the costs and benefits of implementing a computer equipment recycling program and report its findings to an interim legislative committee by December 1, 2003.

     Significant Issues

HJM 58 reports that no program exists in New Mexico to minimize the increasing volume of obsolete computer equipment.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

HJM 58 does not contain an appropriation. The Solid Waste Bureau of the Department of Environment would likely provide the key staff expertise. Under the LFC budget recommendation, the Solid Waste Bureau received an increase of $150.0 from the general fund. With this funding, it would be able to meet the increased level of effort required by this joint memorial.
