SUMMARY

 

     Synopsis of Bill

 

Senate Joint Memorial 23 requests the State Board of Education (SBE) to study the benefits of smaller schools and methods to reduce school size and to report the findings of that study to the Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) by November 1,2003.

 

     Significant Issues

 

The bill sites research on the advantages of small schools, in the areas of safety, attendance rates, lower dropout rates and better participation rates.

 

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

 

The SDE indicates that the department would be able to fulfill the requirements of the legislation.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

 

According to SDE, current staff would be able to accomplish the request.
