A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE HISTORIC RAIL YARD IN ALBUQUERQUE INCLUDE A TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM.



WHEREAS, over five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) of public funds from Albuquerque, Bernalillo county, the state and the United States department of housing and urban development has already been committed to the development of the wheels museum; and

WHEREAS, over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000) of foundation, corporate and other private funding has been committed to the development of the wheels museum; and

WHEREAS, it is the express understanding of the government agencies and the private donors that have contributed to the wheels museum that the museum is committed to the redevelopment of the historic Santa Fe railroad rail yard in the Barelas neighborhood in downtown Albuquerque; and

WHEREAS, the presence of a transportation museum in the redeveloped rail yard will provide significant tourism and attract other investment in the area; and

WHEREAS, there are significant and compelling reasons to support a transportation museum at the redeveloped rail yard;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Albuquerque and the downtown action team be requested to ensure that any redevelopment plans for the historic Santa Fe railroad rail yard in downtown Albuquerque include a transportation museum as part of the plan; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the developers of the rail yard site be encouraged to involve the wheels museum in the creation of a transportation museum in the historic Santa Fe railroad rail yard; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor and city manager of Albuquerque, the county administrator of Bernalillo county, the downtown action team and the wheels museum.
