A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO ORDER THAT THE UNITED STATES FLAG AND THE NEW MEXICO FLAG BE FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF UPON THE DEATH IN THE LINE OF DUTY OF A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER.



WHEREAS, law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day, patrolling New Mexico's roads and neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, law enforcement officers selflessly protect and serve others, usually for wages that are not commensurate with the risks of their duties; and

WHEREAS, one hundred nineteen law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in New Mexico, according to the national law enforcement officers memorial fund; and

WHEREAS, each death of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty represents the ultimate sacrifice that one person can make in the service of another and it should be recognized as such by all New Mexicans; and

WHEREAS, the governor has the authority to order the flag of the United States and the flag of New Mexico lowered to half-staff;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to order that all United States flags and New Mexico flags being flown within New Mexico be lowered to half-staff upon the death in the line of duty of a New Mexico law enforcement officer; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor.
